Rag Rugging
Rag Rugging is a process of using strips of fabric to make into a rug in a variety of ways.
Just take a quick look at this clip of myself on the Alan Titchmarsh show!
Rag Rug Tradition
Rag Rug making was very much a working class tradition in Britain.
Rag Rugs were made out of necessity and were created using rough strips of fabric generally cut out of clothes which were no longer in a condition to be used as anything other than rags.
Rag Rug making was predominantly an occupation in the North of England where many textile mills and factories were situated.
The old clothes would be cut into strips and either hooked or prodded into an old sack.
Rag Rugs were generally used until worn out and threadbare so early examples of Rag Rugs are very rare!
Rag Rugging has been known in Britain and Europe for centuries; however it was America where it developed into an art form!
